Dreaming the Gokstadt, Northern Lands and Islands

Serpentine South Gallery 26 November 1988 — 8 January 1989 Free

This exhibition presented Thomas Joshua Cooper’s stark black and white photographs of empty and elemental northern landscapes.

The California-born photographer has devoted his professional practice to creating extraordinary images of the world’s extremities. This exhibition took its name from the area of Norway famous for its Viking burial mound and eponymous well-preserved Viking ship.

A publication was produced to accompany the exhibition edited by Graeme Murray and Catriona Grant.
