Serpentine South Gallery 7 May — 7 Jun 1992 Free

This exhibition presented the first significant showing in Britain of work by a number of young artists from Europe and America.

Employing photography, sculpture and installation, the participating artists investigated such themes as language, memory and identity, particularly raising questions of objectivity in the process.

A number of works from Cindy Bernhard’s series Ask the Dust explored ideas concerning both collective memory and archival processes. In the selection presented, Bernhard researched and subsequently returned to the location where scenes in famous films, such as North by Northwest, were shot. She then photographed the exact place from the point of view of the original film. Several of the artists made new work for the show, responding to the architecture and site of the gallery.

The exhibition was curated in association with Henry Bond.
